Hytale Mushroom Farming: Easy Early-Game Food That Spreads by Itself

I’m the Professor. Just starting out on your adventure and running short on food? Farming needs seeds before you can even begin, and chasing down animals is a real chore.

So today’s research topic is mushrooms. Here’s the secret: in Hytale, mushrooms spread on their own once you pick them and plant them. On top of that, you can turn them into a healing meal just by roasting them over a campfire. Mushrooms can solve your early-game food problem all by themselves!

▶ There’s a video on this too (in Japanese)!

The Short Version: Mushroom Living in 3 Steps

  1. Pick: Brown Cap Mushroom Brown Cap Mushroom and friends grow in every zone
  2. Plant: just place them on dirt or grass. After a while they spread to the surrounding area on their own
  3. Roast: toss them in a Campfire Campfire and in 2 seconds you’ve got a Roast Vegetable Roast Vegetable

Mushrooms Spread on Their Own Once Planted

Various mushrooms planted on grass and spreading
Mushrooms planted on grass. Leave them alone and they spread around them

I dug into the game data, and sure enough, mushrooms have a proper spreading mechanic built in.

  • Where to place: any spot where the block underneath is dirt or grass. No tilling, no seeds needed
  • Time to spread: roughly 10–20 minutes after planting (a few in-game hours)
  • How they spread: 1–3 mushrooms at a time, appearing within 4 blocks. They can even climb up ledges up to 2 blocks high
  • New mushrooms spread further too

For comparison, wheat takes a full in-game day (about 48 minutes) from planting to harvest. Mushrooms need no seeds and grow several times faster.

Tip: When They Stop Spreading, Harvest Everything and Replant

Every time a mushroom spreads, its chance to spread again is cut in half. So if you leave them alone, they gradually stop spreading.

When that happens, harvest them all once and replant. They’ll start spreading happily again. The most efficient setup is a mushroom farm of flat dirt near your base, repeating the cycle of “spread → harvest → replant.”

Mushrooms That Spread

These 9 types spread when planted. If in doubt, go with the Brown Cap Mushroom, which you can find anywhere. You can’t go wrong.

Mushroom Where to find Spreads when planted Can be roasted Professor’s note
Brown Cap Mushroom Brown Cap Mushroom All zones ○ ○ Top pick. Found everywhere

Zone 1 = Emerald Grove, Zone 2 = Howling Sands, Zone 3 = Whisperfrost Frontiers, Zone 4 = Devastated Lands.

Mushrooms That Don’t Spread (But Are Worth Knowing)

Mushroom What’s it like?
Blue Glowing Mushroom Glowing Mushrooms (6 colors) Edible raw, but gives 2 seconds of poison. Doesn’t spread. Safe once roasted
Brown Mushroom Shelf Mushroom Shelves (3 colors) Step on it for a big jump. Doesn’t spread. Can be roasted and eaten
Brown Mushroom Block Giant Mushroom Caps Dropped when you break a giant mushroom. Can be roasted and eaten
Small Boomshroom Boomshroom Not edible. 2 of them + Charcoal makes Boom Powder

Careful: Glowing Mushrooms are poisonous if eaten raw. Roast them over a campfire and they become a Roast Vegetable just like any other mushroom.

Just Roast It! Mushroom Recipes

Mushroom cooking is as simple as roasting them over a campfire. A Campfire Campfire takes 4 Sticks + 2 Rubble, and you can craft it on the spot without a workbench.

Dish Ingredients Made at Effect
Roast Vegetable Roast Vegetable 1 mushroom Campfire (2 sec) Restores 5% health
+ 6 min health regen
+ 6 min max stamina ×1.1
Mushroom Skewer Mushroom Skewer 1 Stick + 3 mushrooms Chef’s Stove Restores 10% health
+ 6 min health regen (strong)
+ 6 min max stamina ×1.2
Mushroom Salad Mushroom Salad 1 Lettuce + 3 mushrooms Chef’s Stove Same as Mushroom Skewer

Roast Vegetable Roast Vegetable doesn’t just heal you. It also gives 6 minutes of gradual health regen and raises your max stamina. That’s more than enough for early-game exploring.

Once you can build a Chef's Stove Chef’s Stove (2 Copper Ingots + 10 Logs + 5 Stone), upgrade to the Mushroom Skewer Mushroom Skewer. It doubles the healing and the buffs get stronger too.

Bonus: Mushroom Shelves as Jump Pads

Brown Mushroom Shelf Mushroom Shelves, which grow on tree trunks and the like, bounce you high into the air when you land on them. Even better, for 2 seconds after touching one you take no fall damage.

You can place them as blocks, so use them as jump pads to reach the upper floors of your base, or as a cushion when leaping down from high places. Honestly, they’re too good to eat!

The Professor’s Summary

  • Mushrooms spread on their own just by planting them on dirt or grass
  • When they stop spreading, harvest them all and replant
  • Just roast them over a campfire for a Roast Vegetable, complete with a 6-minute recovery boost
  • Once you’re settled, make Mushroom Skewers for double the healing
  • Don’t eat Glowing Mushrooms raw. Use Mushroom Shelves as jump pads

Don’t get hung up on seeds. Secure your food with mushrooms first. That’s the Professor’s recommendation for an easier early game! The numbers come from the game data (Pre-release 7.5) and may change with future updates. For details on each mushroom, check the Item Database.
