I’m the Professor. With Chapter 1, we can finally use rune magic. But I keep hearing the same thing: “There are seven of them โ which one am I supposed to make first?!”
So this time, I dug into the game data on all 7 spell runes and compared them by damage, cast rate and ease of use. Use it to help pick your very first one!
This article compares spell runes only. For combos with support runes, which power up your spells, check out Spell Runes ร Support Runes: All 72 Combos Ranked.
Bottom Line: When in Doubt, Pick Fireball!
Fireball: The safe pick. Fires from range and is ready again almost instantly โ a true all-rounder
Ground Slam: Best against groups. For players who love launching enemies sky-high
Charged Shot: Hardest single hit. For players who want to wear bosses down one big shot at a time
That said, the right answer depends on you. Whether you love fighting with a sword or just want to round up enemies and have fun, picking the one that fits your playstyle is the most enjoyable way to go.
How to Make Spell Runes (Quick Recap)
To make a spell rune, take
Runestone Shard ร 2 and craft it in the goblin lab at the Goblin Tinkerer’s Workbench. Then equip it at the statue in the Forgotten Temple, the Runebinder’s Lattice, and you’ll be able to cast it with the E and R keys. For how to collect shards, see the Chapter 1 roundup.
Mana caps at 100 and regenerates 1 point every 0.3 seconds. In other words, the cheaper a spell is, the more often you can cast it.

All 7 Spell Runes in Detail
1.
Fireball
The safe pick! The easiest, most versatile spell
Launches a ball of fire that explodes on impact. With a 2-second cooldown, it’s ready again almost right away โ that’s its biggest strength. The explosion hits everything within a 2.5-block radius, so it tags clustered enemies all at once.
Mana cost 30 / Cooldown 2s / Long range
- โ Safe to cast from a distance
- โ Short cooldown means lots of casts
- โ Area damage handles groups well
- โณ Per-hit damage (28) isn’t especially high
- โณ Spamming it drains your mana fast
Ease of use โ โ โ โ โ ยท Spectacle โ โ โ โ โ ยท Fun โ โ โ โ โ ยท Power โ โ โ โ โ
๐ Best for: The safe pick โ easy for anyone
2.
Charged Shot
Strongest single hit! A charged bolt of ice
Hold to charge, then release to fire a freezing bolt. 55 damage at full charge is the biggest single hit of any rune. At full charge it will freeze the first enemy it hits, then split into icicles flying in 3 directions.
Mana cost 35 / Cooldown 4s / Long range
- โ Highest per-hit damage of any rune (55)
- โ Also the highest 30s total damage against a single target (275)
- โ Freezes enemies in place
- โณ Takes time to charge (about 2 seconds to full)
- โณ You move slowly while charging
- โณ Hard to land on enemies that move around a lot
Ease of use โ โ โ โ โ ยท Spectacle โ โ โ โ โ ยท Fun โ โ โ โ โ ยท Power โ โ โ โ โ
๐ Best for: Wearing bosses down one big shot at a time
3.
Ground Slam
Most spectacular! Launches whole groups into the air
Smashes the ground and sends nearby enemies flying with rock spikes (3-block radius). The slam (15) plus the rock spikes (35) add up to 50 damage total. The more enemies around you, the stronger it gets โ its 30s total damage against groups is the best of any rune (600).
Mana cost 40 / Cooldown 5s / Close range
- โ Overwhelming damage against groups
- โ Watching enemies fly into the sky is so satisfying
- โ Hits hard even on a single cast (50)
- โณ You have to get close for it to hit
- โณ Pricey at 40 mana with a 5-second cooldown
Ease of use โ โ โ โ โ ยท Spectacle โ โ โ โ โ ยท Fun โ โ โ โ โ ยท Power โ โ โ โ โ
๐ Best for: Diving into crowds of enemies
4.
Wind Strike
Wind blades for sword users
Infuses your sword with the power of wind, so your next 3 sword attacks each send out a piercing wind blade (10 damage each). Since it stacks on top of your sword damage, think of it as making your sword attacks themselves stronger.
Mana cost 30 / Cooldown 2s / Sword reach
- โ Adds extra hits on top of your sword attacks
- โ Wind blades pierce, so they hit enemies lined up in a row
- โ 2-second cooldown keeps it easy to cycle
- โณ Useless without a sword
- โณ Each wind blade does fairly little damage
Ease of use โ โ โ โ โ ยท Spectacle โ โ โ โ โ ยท Fun โ โ โ โ โ ยท Power โ โ โ โ โ
๐ Best for: Sword fighters
5.
Imbue Poison
A weapon buff that gets better the more you hit
Coats your weapon in poison for 8 seconds. Every hit adds a poison stack (up to 3), and each stack deals 2 damage per second for 6 seconds. The big selling point: it works with swords and bows alike.
Mana cost 40 / Cooldown 4s / Depends on weapon
- โ Works for both melee and ranged
- โ Poison damage stacks on top of your weapon damage
- โ Keeps damaging enemies even as they run away
- โณ Slow-burn damage, so it’s not very flashy
- โณ Does nothing unless you keep landing weapon hits
Ease of use โ โ โ โ โ ยท Spectacle โ โ โ โ โ ยท Fun โ โ โ โ โ ยท Power โ โ โ โ โ
๐ Best for: Racking up hits with a bow or weapon
6.
Enrage
Makes a strong weapon even stronger
For 8 seconds, you deal 30% more physical, elemental and ranged damage. The catch is that you also become easier to hurt. As long as your mana holds out, you can keep it running almost nonstop.
Mana cost 45 / Cooldown 4s / Self
- โ Scales with your weapon (+30% to all damage)
- โ Combines easily with your other attacks
- โณ You take more damage too
- โณ Can’t attack on its own
Ease of use โ โ โ โ โ ยท Spectacle โ โ โ โ โ ยท Fun โ โ โ โ โ ยท Power โ โ โ โ โ
๐ Best for: Players with a strong weapon
7.
Chain Hook
A fun chain that yanks enemies in
Fires a chain that pulls every enemy near the impact point toward you and slows them briefly. It does almost no damage (3), but for gathering enemies up and taking them out together, it’s a great support pick.
Mana cost 50 / Cooldown 6s / Long range
- โ Pulls in distant or fleeing enemies
- โ Gather them up, then finish them together with your sword or an area attack
- โ Just plain fun to use
- โณ Deals almost no damage
- โณ Pricey at 50 mana with a 6-second cooldown
Ease of use โ โ โ โ โ ยท Spectacle โ โ โ โ โ ยท Fun โ โ โ โ โ ยท Power โ โ โ โ โ
๐ Best for: Rounding up enemies for fun

The Professor’s Summary
- For your first rune, Fireball is the safe choice. It fires from range and is hard to mess up
- If you want to fight big and flashy, go Ground Slam; if you care about raw single hits, go Charged Shot
- If you love fighting with weapons, use Wind Strike, Imbue Poison or Enrage to power up your weapon
- In the end, whichever one you like is the right answer! Spell runes only cost 2 shards, so I recommend trying out a bunch of them
Once you get the hang of it, adding support runes makes them even stronger. For which combos are the strongest, head over to Spell Runes ร Support Runes: Best Combos Ranked. Detailed data on every rune is in the Rune Encyclopedia.
