Hytale Update 8 Part 1 (Pre-Release): Rune Numbers, Bench Homes, Hurt Animations and More

Hytale Update 8 Part 1

Hi! I’m KeniPoyo, the only person in Japan playing Hytale. Update 8 Part 1 hit the Pre-Release on October 22. Chapter 1 came out just ten days ago and we already have the next update. The team is on fire.

The Pre-Release is where new changes land first before they reach the main game. This one is mostly fixes and polish, but there are quite a few changes you’ll actually feel while playing.

Shout-out to community contributors Ed1lan, Fullavatar, Narwhal and NoctuaAstrum, who helped with fixes and features this time.

The short version

  • Rune tooltips now show real numbers, and they update with support runes
  • Crafting benches count as home, even without a bed
  • Breaking a Large Goblin Chest drops 2 Small Goblin Chests
  • Enemies get new hurt animations, with bigger reactions on a stagger
  • Terrain generates about 2x faster, and VRAM use drops by up to 250 MB at 4K
  • Import and Export buttons let you share avatars

Rune magic is easier to read

My favorite change. Rune tooltips now show the real damage, duration and effect numbers, and they change when you socket support runes. No more guessing how strong a combo is.

Wind StrikeWind StrikeSplitSplitBounceBounce
  • Wind Strike now uses a hit shape, so its hits land more consistently
  • The Fork and Ricochet tooltip labels are now Split and Bounce, matching the rune descriptions

I’ll re-test my rune combo ranking once the numbers are visible.

Building and bases

  • Crafting benches now mark the area around them as home, just like beds
  • Fences, walls, bars and village walls connect instantly when placed
  • Branches and Bone Ribs now connect into corners and rotate to match
  • The sunny grass block got repainted, and Orbis Birch trees grow taller and thinner
  • The keep-durability-on-death world setting works again. Re-apply it on existing worlds

Goblin Breach and dungeons

  • Void crystals in the Guttering Hollows now shatter when their supporting block is destroyed
  • The Large Goblin Chest now drops two Small Goblin Chests when broken
  • In the Goblin Crypt, the big skeleton can no longer get stuck in the Elite room, and the treasure room chest now has the right rewards
  • The Deepworks got some closed-off shortcuts, a more predictable flame trap that is just as deadly, and a fix for the exit disappearing
  • Merchants restock even where time is paused, like the Deepworks
  • The death screen now tells you about extra hazards, like the Feastmaster‘s vomit

New hurt animations

Goblins, Skeletons, Zombies, Spiders, Rats, Scarak Lice and the Void enemies all got extra hurt and death animations, with heavier reactions when a hit staggers them.

  • Zombies got a new model and textures
  • The Void Spectre got new eyelids and a texture touch-up
  • A mysterious entity in the Deepworks got a new look. Who could it be?
  • Young Scarak Broodmothers use the correct smaller model
  • Some Outlanders had misplaced their faces. They found them
  • Rhino Toads headbutt a bit softer and no longer look like they teleport

Avatars and cosmetics

The preset list in My Avatar now has Import and Export buttons, so you can share your look with friends. The Cursebreaker Goblin Costume Hood got zipped and unzipped variants, the Witch Hat, Top Hat and Leather Cap got new variants, and several clothes are back to their original color palettes.

Graphics and performance

  • Sun shafts were reworked to look cleaner and run lighter, and are now always on
  • Bloom looks the same at every resolution
  • TAA was removed and FXAA is now the default
  • Shadows no longer wobble when you stand still
  • Client VRAM use is down, by up to 250 MB at 4K
  • Terrain generates about twice as fast, and servers boot faster
  • Lag spikes when joining a server on Wi-Fi are fixed

Crash fixes

  • Using a portal key on the Ancient Gateway no longer crashes
  • Leaving the Forgotten Temple no longer freezes small servers
  • Joining a world hosted on Windows no longer times out after about 30 seconds
  • Switching avatar presets no longer kicks you into offline mode

For modders and server owners

  • Legacy worldgen v1 JSON no longer loads, so old worldgen packs need rebuilding
  • The in-game mod browser only installs CurseForge files tagged with the game version
  • Dedicated servers now start on quiche
  • A new Seedling Woods region for Adventure 1.0 was added with five new biomes, currently reachable only through the instances command
🎮
KeniPoyo’s take
No flashy new feature, but a lot of small annoyances got fixed. Real rune numbers and bench homes are my favorites. And Seedling Woods sounds like Kweebec country, which makes me even more excited for 1.0.
