The Professor here. Today: how to farm Runestone Shards.
With Runestone Shards you can craft the runestones used for rune magic at the Goblin Tinkerer’s Workbench. Chapter 1 gave everyone magic, but without shards you can’t make any runes.
The short version: 6 ways to get shards
- Guaranteed: the Gobliterator drops 4, the Feastmaster, Void Fiend and Revenant Guardian drop 2 each
- By chance: Goblin Burners at 50% and Shiny Scrap Piles at 33%, 1 each
- If you want them reliably, beat the big enemies. Once you know the trick, they are easier than they look

Feastmaster
He waits deep in the slums.

- Use daggers and fight hit-and-run
- Put your back to a wall and wait for his charge
- Clear the small fry first with a weapon that hits groups
- Dodge the charge, then go all in while he is open
Void Fiend
Every outpost on the surface of a Goblin Breach has one sealed in its basement. Goblin, spider or Void, any outpost works.

- At the outpost, find the stairs leading underground
- Beat its minions, then break the seal with a pickaxe
- Stab with a sword, back off, stab again. Repeat

Its heavy hits and area attacks are dangerous, so never stay close. Probably the toughest of the three. See How to farm Voidhearts for the location.
Revenant Guardian
Deep inside stone ruins. The Revenant Guardian has lots of minions around it, so clear those first.

It’s huge but not very smart. Block the way with blocks and damage it safely. The shards drop when you beat its second phase.
Gobliterator
The Gobliterator drops 4 shards, but it’s the hardest of all. Check the Gobliterator guide before you try.

Chance drops
- Goblin Burner: 50% for 1. Not a boss, but don’t get careless
- Shiny Scrap Pile: 33% for 1 when broken with a pickaxe. Always break them

See the Goblin junk drop guide for everything junk piles drop.
Once you have shards, try different combos and find your own best rune. My picks are in the rune combo ranking.
