The Void Fiend is a Void knight found in Goblin Breaches. It has a hefty 700 health, but it always drops a Voidheart, a Veilbound Key and 2 Runestone Shards. If you need Voidhearts reliably, this is the enemy to hunt.

Where to find it

The Void Fiend sealed in crystal
1. Under every outpost

The easiest place to meet one. Every outpost on the surface of a Goblin Breach has one sealed in a crystal room in its basement. Goblin, spider or Void, any outpost works. Look for the slightly larger buildings on your map and find the stairs down.

Breaking the crystal with a pickaxe
2. Breaking the seal

Clear the minions first, then break the crystal with a pickaxe to wake it up. It lets out a shockwave as it breaks free, so step back right away.

3. Late in the Void Surge

Stay in a Goblin Breach long enough and the Void Surge begins. In its final stage, unsealed Void Fiends appear. See the Void Surge timeline.

They all look and fight the same. The first three are the ones you meet in normal play, and any of them drops the Veilbound Key.

Attacks

  • Sword combo: heavy left and right swings. Don't stand in front and tank them
  • Overhead slam: a big wind-up, then a hard hit. Sidestep when you see it raise the sword
  • Punch: a quick close-range hit if you hug it
  • Guard: keep hitting it and it raises its guard. Back off and reset instead of hitting the block
  • Teleport: back off too far and it teleports right up to you, so kiting from range is hard

How to beat it

  1. Clear the minions first: freeing it with other Void enemies around gets messy fast
  2. Hit and step back: land one or two hits, back off a little and wait for it to whiff. Too far and it teleports, so stay at mid range
  3. Stop when it guards: circle around and wait for the next opening
  4. Freezing doesn't work: it is immune to freeze, so ice runes won't lock it down
  5. Bring Adamantite gear or better: iron gear makes this rough. Pack healing potions

Drops and what they're for

Veilbound Key Γ—1

Opens a glowing purple coffer and starts a wave fight. It disappears when you leave the Breach, so use it there.

Runestone Shard Γ—2

Used to craft runestones for rune magic. Two guaranteed shards is a great deal.

Essence of the Void Γ—3–4

Goes into the Arcanist's Workbench, Mithril armor and much more.

The Professor's tip

Beat one at an outpost, then take its Veilbound Key straight to a coffer wave fight. That is up to 4 Voidhearts in one Breach. The full route is in How to farm Voidhearts.

FAQ

Where is the Void Fiend in Hytale?

It is sealed in the basement of every outpost on the surface of a Goblin Breach, whether Goblin, spider or Void. It also appears late in the Void Surge.

What does the Void Fiend drop?

Always 1 Voidheart, 1 Veilbound Key, 2 Runestone Shards and 3–4 Essence of the Void.

How do you break the seal?

Kill the enemies around it, then break the crystal with a pickaxe.

Can you fight it from range?

Not easily. If you back off too far it teleports to you. Hitting and stepping back works best.
