The Professor here. Today is a little different: let’s dig into the truth about Hytale’s world revealed in Chapter 1.
The walls of the Goblin Lab hold six Goblin paintings. They look like decoration, but put them in order and they tell a story. Add the item descriptions, the notes scattered around the world and the official blog, and you can start to see what happened to Orbis.

The setup: Orbis and the Echo
Hytale takes place in Orbis, and Orbis has a goddess: Gaia. The official blog from January 2026 calls Gaia the Avatar of Orbis, and adds that some factions might not even know it.
“not all factions may be aware of this fact”Official blog: A look at Hytale's Lore and Philosophy
The same post talks about the Echoes of Orbis: Hytale’s lore becomes canon when players step into them for the first time.
Chapter 1 brings that word into the game. The Forgotten Temple is subtitled Edge of the Echo, and when a Goblin Breach starts the game says “Goblins are invading your Echo!”
Then there’s the message you get when you unlock the Heart of Orbis:
“Void's curse keeps Orbis locked away but there may yet be a way to break it.”Heart of Orbis unlock message
“A deity rests within this Heart of Orbis”Heart of Orbis unlock message
The Ancient Gateway says it too: the curse keeps Gaia’s Orbis locked away, but there are ways to pierce the Void that veils it.

The world we play in is probably not Orbis itself, but an echo of Orbis. The real Orbis is sealed behind the Veil of Void. The deity sleeping in the Heart of Orbis is most likely Gaia, the Avatar of Orbis.
Fallen civilizations and their hubris
Orbis was home to several great civilizations that rose and fell. The clearest line about them is hidden in the Bone Fragment description:
“Orbis' most advanced civilizations shared a common trait – the hubris that ultimately led to their downfall.”Bone Fragment
- Alchemy Bench: the alchemists of old chased eternal life, and might have found it, just not in the form they imagined
- Arcane Bench: the arcane arts came closest to Avatar powers. Had they mastered them sooner, perhaps they would not have been so easily swayed
- Runes: the Runebinders tried to mimic Avatar powers with runes
The cursed flame and Crucible
Chapter 1 keeps mentioning Crucible and the Enkindled who lived there. Adamantite once powered Crucible’s advances, and Cindercloth scraps tell us that a cursed flame scoured Crucible.
“Magic is pure. Add mechanism to magic and the magic is tainted.”Enkindled Letter: Workshops of War
The letter ends with “Yet now they say we should build it for war.” Mixing magic and machines, and being pushed to do it for war. Another chapter of hubris, maybe.
The Outlanders and the whispers
A 2019 official blog post introduced the Outlanders as a breakaway human faction. An Enkindled journal found in Chapter 1 mentions friends who left to hold the line against the Outlanders.
“this breakaway human faction”Official blog: A visual tour of zone 3, 2019
And the Statue of The Watcher is creepy:
“when they arrived, the whispers were already there.”Statue of The Watcher
The Statue of the Founding Builder hints at atrocities under the first and last Scarak Empress.
Alchemists, arcanists, Runebinders, the Enkindled: they all tried to reach Avatar-like power on their own. That is the hubris the Bone Fragment warns about. Put “so easily swayed” next to the whispers, and it starts to look like someone was nudging these civilizations from the shadows.
Six paintings, one Goblin escape
Now the main event. Each of the six paintings in the Goblin Lab has a short Goblin caption. In story order:

- The Veil of Void: “Everything is wrong. Sky is too purple. Shouldn’t stay here. A Makinomagistra sees work through.”
- The Failed Excursions: “Too many failed attempts. The purple barrier repels all. There has to be a way. It can’t block us in forever.”
- The Traveling Goblin: “Works!”
- The Strange Place: “There are Kweebecs here but this isn’t Orbis. Similar, but not the same. The sky isn’t purple either.”
- The Required Repair: “The gate doesn’t work anymore. There’s no way to go onward. The parts are on the other side. Back beneath the purple sky.”
- The Breaches: “The other Goblins come too. Not all of them friendly. There are new things here. It’s safer here. But the parts we need are over there.”
“Similar, but not the same.” That line fits perfectly with the idea that our world is an Echo of Orbis.
The Makinomagistra
The Makinomagistra named in the first painting is a title. Only Goblins whose obsession with technology goes beyond even the Enkindled engineers can claim it.
“the first Goblin to manage to escape Orbis through her own inventions”Makinomagistra memory
“Perhaps her critical failure lies in the origins of the fascination itself.”Makinomagistra memory
The gate was Enkindled research
A torn Enkindled research journal describes strange symbols in old ruins and a big gate that might move its user somewhere else with the right catalyst. Below it, in a Goblin’s hand:
“Found it! Scrappers will take it back to the Deepworks.”Torn Enkindled Research: Strange Gateways
So the Goblins’ gate was an Ancient Gateway the Enkindled had been studying. Magical Translocation logs the tests: the first subject vanished, the second left its legs behind, the third arrived too high, the fourth spoke from inside a wall, and the fifth finally came back in one piece. Very Goblin.
Too Heavy adds that a big machine couldn’t fit through the gate and had to be left behind.

Where the Goblin Breach takes you
The Breach leads to the Guttering Hollows, the ruins of a lost Enkindled settlement where Goblins hold court, mistaking a graveyard for a kingdom. “Guttering” describes a candle flame flickering right before it goes out.

And it’s inside Orbis. The Veil of Void recovers quickly and ejects those who don’t belong, which is exactly why a Breach has a time limit. See the Void Surge timeline for details.
“Breaches the Veil of Void that seals Orbis.”The Goblin Gateway
The Makinomagistra used an Ancient Gateway to escape Orbis into the Echo, arriving at the Forgotten Temple, the Edge of the Echo. Then the gate broke, and the parts were back in Orbis. Other Goblins started coming through the hole. That is what a Goblin Breach really is. When we jump into a Breach, we might just be helping her collect parts.
The purple sky and the ones who didn’t die properly
“Stories say it was red or blue before.”Why Purple?
Plants are turning purple, grass stops looking like grass, and the Goblins hate it. The sky of Orbis wasn’t always purple. The Void’s curse is slowly changing the world.
Then there’s The Ones Who Didn’t Die Properly, a recent Goblin note:
- Beware the Vain One. He tries to twist us like him.
- Beware the Small One. Her machines put ours to shame.
- Beware the Strong One. He laughs while things break.
- Beware the Shrouded One…
The last line just stops.
The Deepworks description is unsettling too: its greatest mind recently vanished, and when machine and Goblin alike fall silent, other murmurs might begin to emerge.
“Didn't die properly” sounds like beings who lingered on after death. That echoes the alchemists who found eternal life “not in the form they imagined”. And the whispers at the Watcher statue, the murmurs in the Deepworks… what if they are the same voice?
The Professor’s timeline
Everything in this box is theory.
- Civilizations in Orbis chased Avatar powers and fell to their own hubris
- Something whispering may have been swaying them
- A cursed flame scoured Crucible, the Void's curse sealed Orbis, and the sky turned purple
- The Goblin genius Makinomagistra used an Enkindled-studied Ancient Gateway to escape into the Echo
- She arrived at the Forgotten Temple, but the gate broke and the parts stayed in Orbis
- Other Goblins followed through the hole: the Goblin Breach
- In the Echo sleeps a deity, likely Gaia. Collecting memories brings her will back
Mysteries still open
- What happens when the deity’s will is restored?
- Who is the Shrouded One?
- Where do the whispers come from, and why did the sky turn purple?
- What was the Makinomagistra’s critical failure?
The official blog says Hytale’s lore is told through archaeology: hints left in structures, items and objects around the world. That’s why piecing together notes like this is so much fun. The blog also says there are secrets to be found throughout the world, so I can’t wait to see what the next chapter reveals.
You can get recipes for replica Goblin paintings from the Veilbound Coffer waves and hang them in your base. See How to farm Voidhearts. Knowing the story makes them hit different.
